The Japanese art of engraving in service of K-OVER

Mari Yoshida, master engraver with a unique style, shares her journey through art, technique, and culture. From Japanese traditions to the refined elegance of the Florentine school, her handcrafted work adds value and soul to K-OVER metal creations, transforming them into true works of art.

How did your passion for engraving begin?

In 2001, during an exhibition in Tokyo, I saw Giuliano Foglia working with the repoussé and chasing technique. I fell in love with it instantly. At the time, I was studying jewelry in Tokyo, and that moment was life-changing.

I was born in Yokohama, Japan, but I also lived in Mexico and Germany as a child. These multicultural experiences deeply shaped my path.

Who has inspired you most in your artistic journey?

Definitely Giuliano and Carlo Foglia. Their skill and style guided me, and today I feel that my personal touch is very close to the Florentine tradition.

What are the greatest technical challenges in your work?

Once you truly learn how to repoussé and chase, you can apply the technique to any metal — gold, silver, copper…. The material matters, but mastery of the technique is key. It’s all about precision and control.

Do you use traditional techniques?

Yes, I use ancient and traditional methods. I want to continue this way: creating contemporary pieces with classical techniques. For me, preserving the soul of craftsmanship is essential.

How would you define your art?

Repoussé and chasing is an art of precision — but also of movement. The metal transforms with every blow of the hammer and tools. The true challenge, especially for K-OVER, is to preserve the form while also infusing energy and expression into each piece.

How do you turn client requests into personalized engravings?

Every client has a different idea, a unique vision. My job is to listen, sketch, and interpret. Creating customized pieces is truly the joy of my life.

How does a custom engraving for a K-OVER product come to life?

There are two main approaches:

  • Simple mode: engraving the client’s name, initials, or logo onto a K-OVER product.
  • Complex mode: creating an original design from scratch, based on a theme or personal inspiration chosen by the client.

What makes K-OVER engravings so unique?

With repoussé and chasing, even the simplest item can be transformed into a one-of-a-kind creation. Every engraving has its own unique personality.

What cultural influences do you feel closest to?

There is a tradition of repoussé and chasing in Japan as well, though it differs from the Italian method. Since I trained with Giuliano Foglia, my style now reflects a more Florentine approach — refined and elegant.

What is the future of engraving in the digital age?

Like all forms of art, there will always be someone who keeps “singing without a microphone.” Craftsmanship will never die. Even in a digital world, the value of the handmade remains irreplaceable. I want to continue in this way: using ancient techniques, and always elevating tradition.
